Cabaret Costume

Our show is in less than 1 month. I think we have 2 more Thursday night classes until the week of the show. This scares me senseless but also fills me with a sense of excitement! We’re doing a 3 night show in a forest amphitheater, with fire dancing, fire fingers, acrobats, modern dancers, karate and some top secret things involving a UV light… 😉 So you’ll have to come to our show to see what it’s all about, but I can personally guarantee that you’ll enjoy the performances and that our dancers are of the highest quality!

I went shopping today… and bought a bunch of things I need for a glitzy/cabaret outfit for the show. (yes, I am aware that it is less than a month away) BUT the heavy work has been done. I have blue fringing that I salvaged from a really hideous skirt. (pictured below)

I bought skirt fabric today, (Which is AMAZING!!) as well as bra and belt fabric, sequins and random fake gems. It’s all so pretty and sparkly, I can’t wait to get started! 😀

For inspiration, I looked at Ozma’s costumes on facebook. Ozma is a lovely American lady who now lives in Japan, teaching dance as well as English (I think!). She takes previously fugly costumes and converts them into something amazing. Below is an example!

Here is the inspiration for my costume from Ozma’s page as well: (note how I said I was inspired – not that I’m going to copy!!)

And here (finally) is what I bought today:

Skirt fabric

The skirt fabric (above) is slightly darker than it shows in this picture – here is an example of what it looks like in different lighting: (I kinda love this photo…)

Sparkly things!

I have no idea what these things are called… so if you know – please share! I just know that they are ridiculously expensive! I got mine for R47.95 a meter, but the ones I wanted were R99 a meter!!

I’ll be posting as I work on the bra and belt set! 🙂 Have a great week!

  1. That is really pretty fabric and nice sparkley goodies! The item at the bottom is usually called “rhinestone chain.” That’s ambitious – a whole costume in a month – better you than me! LOL I started one last year and it’s *still* not done! Post your pics on Twitter when you’re done – good luck and happy sewing 🙂

    1. They are great goodies, aren’t they? *excited face* Thank you for telling me what the “sparkly bits” are called! hehe! I’ll be posting my progress on both my Twitter and Facebook page… I have plenty of spare time, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to finish… right? haha!!

    1. The (complete) outfits pictured were not done by me – but an American woman living in Japan! 🙂 She’s incredibly talented – I just use her posts as inspiration! 🙂

  2. Stunning Alex! Cant wait to see the costume and of course the show! I hope you are all stocked up on false eyelashes, drag queen make up etc etc as well! x

  3. Ozma is a real inspiration, isn’t she? I started work on a peacock costume and drew a lot of ideas from her work.

I love the colours you’ve chosen- can’t wait to see the results.
